This workflow explains how you can use LIDAR in AutoCAD Map 3D. Here is the scenario for the workflow, which involves flood control.

A mapping technician in the Works Department of the local authority opens AutoCAD Map 3D, sets the coordinate system, and then uses the Point Cloud Manager to link to the raw point cloud data in the .LAS files. He creates an index file for each one. He then uses the Point Cloud Manager to merge several of the point clouds into a single point cloud, in order to cover the entire area in which the repair work will occur.

Use LIDAR data for elevation analysis

When the index files have been processed and merged, the mapping technician uses the Surface Manager to generate a surface model for the area. This model will be used by the engineers in the department to identify locations where repairs need to be made. He also generates contours from the surface to use in the map book which will be given to the work crews who will carry out the repairs.
